Cape May: The LaPoints Get Spontaneous

20161214

On the week of Max's 4th birthday, Scott had a conference in Cape May, New Jersey.  We hadn't planned on joining him even though it was so close (about 3 hours down the Garden State Parkway until you end at Exit 0) but he ended up getting upgraded to a suite and the weather was a summery 80 degrees.  Also, did I mention it was Max's birthday week and he was bumming about his dad leaving and going to a beach WITHOUT HIM.

Anyway, Scott called with the "you don't believe what happened" news and we ended the conversation with a "see you by dinner."  So the LaPoints (me and the boys) went on a spontaneous road trip.  I threw everything in a backpack, fed Max and Zac lunch, and then began the long journey where I tried not to shit my pants the whole way down.  It was scary for me (first time driving alone with the boys on a major highway) but it was totally worth it… The boys slept most of the way, traffic wasn't so bad (but six lanes!?! YIKES) and we ended the evening with McDonald's and a gorgeous sunset.  So here are some beach-y photos to make that winter day seem that much longer.

After I said, "just take your shoes off, Max."
And his reaction to sand in the toes.  A total beach bum.
(Side note: the hotel we were staying at is directly behind Max.)△

His reaction to sand in his toes.  Not a beach bum.
Zac- What is this?
Maybe we'll try it out.
Max- just dive right in...
…and really own it.
Getting really into the water.
This was just before he was hit by a little wave.  The tide was coming in while we were playing that morning and that ended Zac's kind of liking the beach.
And then we ended at the very back of the beach, by the fences because the Boys didn't want all their toys to be swept away.
△The photo on the right is Zac holding his little blue car.  This is that last photo of it before it was buried and lost forever in the sand.

Max was very proud of this sand castle.  It took him forever to get the right kind of sand for it to stay up.
The light house that was "just down the beach," but really was about a 15 minute drive.  It was closed for the season (much to Max's disappointment and my excitement of not having to argue about why we couldn't climb to the very top).

Cape May was so beautiful and because it was October and not in the middle of summer, the area, which seems like it could get really crazy, was very quiet with mostly locals and older people around.  A spontaneous, relaxing couple days at the beach was just what the little LaPoints and I needed.
