Around Białowieża: part two

20140917

Well, here are the last of the Poland photos!  I'm running a little behind on the blog, but things have been busy around here… in a good way.  It seems like this year has gone by so fast, but I guess that's what happens when you're having fun.  Can you believe that Max is almost two!  It seems like only yesterday we were bringing him home from the hospital…

Anyway, like I said, these are the last of the Białowieża photos.  We managed to sneak in a little "zoo" time while we were there just to get a look at all the local wildlife without having to get up at the crack of dawn (anything before 6am with this toddler, is not happening).  It was actually a nice little park.  Not too many animals, lots of space and we got there early enough so there wasn't a bunch of people.

While we did go to the zoo to see bison, we also attempted to see them out in their natural habitat.  Of course it was after 6am and of course we showed up at the local bison hot spots only to discover that we'd just missed them.  It was kind of funny and frustrating, but we were told that because it was exceptionally hot this year, the bison weren't hanging out in fields for as long as normal and would hide in the forest for most of the day.  I guess there's always next time!

Anyway, I'll try to caption some of the photos since they're random and spread out over a few days.  Also, we've got some fun things ahead for everyone so hopefully I can get my ass in gear and catch up on more photos… like maybe some of Max since it's been a while!

▲the crowd gathering at the bison enclosure▲
▲a wild cat▲
▲we bought some local honey from one of the stands outside of the zoo.  pine and oak, i believe, and so good▲
▲left photo: max is currently in the train phase so he was choo-chooing down these tracks▲
▲we found this cute little tour/hike of a small part of the forest where the Russian royals use to hang out▲
▲a very strong smelling mushroom stem with a LOT of flies (the black bit)▲
right and left photo:  max is just like his father where he likes to pick up bugs and put them on his hands to show people…however, he hasn't quite mastered the art of not killing the insects first▲
▲we found a dead snake on the the path and scott picked it up to set it into the woods… and this is the guy who HATES snakes▲
▲i can't remember what this spider was called, but it greeted us on the morning we went in search of bison▲
▲a bison resting spot▲
▲a tree stump the bison used for scratching▲
▲a bison watering hole▲
▲the field where the bison would come in the morning and evenings to eat▲
▲on our way back to the institute we saw a family of boar on the side of the road.  when scott rolled down the window to take a photo, they ran off so we just got a photo of mama boar's ass▲
▲scott went out again in the evening (during max's bedtime) to see if they could find more wildlife▲
